History

In July 2001, two of the world's most prominent technology publishers, O'Reilly Media, Inc. and the Pearson Technology Group, joined forces to create Safari Books Online. The premise was simple: Compile the best technology books from the leading authors and publishers into an online database that IT and programming professionals could quickly and easily search for reliable, definitive answers to mission-critical questions.

The result has been extraordinary. Safari's flagship service, Safari Tech Books Online, immediately exceeded all expectations, selling site licenses to Fortune 50 companies, major universities, and leading training organizations worldwide. Faced with increasing customer demand for more content covering a wider range of subject matter, Safari tapped into the vast repositories of its venture partners and many other respected publishers to expand its product line.

Safari's customers are hungry to learn and come to Safari Books Online for immediate access to the latest on emerging technologies from the innovators and inventors themselves. In 2006, Safari launched three new publishing mediums designed to accelerate information to its subscribers: Rough Cuts, Short Cuts and video.

  • The Rough Cuts service enables authors to publish their working manuscripts on Safari. This program gives the Safari community early access to pre-published information and allows the authors to interact with their readers for feedback as the book develops.
  • The Short Cuts service is another publishing medium in Safari that accelerates information to its subscribers. Short Cuts are deep concise works by Safari authors, generally under one hundred pages in length, and only found in digital format.
  • Instructional video now complements Safari's immense repository of published works. Videos from lynda.com and other Safari publishers deliver expert visual instruction on web development, digital media, and many design and development applications.

Today Safari Books Online offers a depth and breadth of technical content that no other electronic reference resource comes close to matching. Safari Books Online has become the trusted search for technology information. Without question, Safari is fast changing the way that corporate, academic, and training organizations access information.
