Two of the best known technology publishers in the business - O'Reilly Media and Pearson Technology Group - have joined forces to create Safari Books Online, an on-demand digital library focused on providing web-based access to the very best technology and business content available. Safari Books Online is headquartered in Sebastopol, CA with offices in San Francisco, Boston, and Tempe.
Our growing company is looking for an Audience Manager to help inform development of innovative
web products within the Product Management team. A successful Audience Manager will achieve three main goals:
- Own user research strategy: Immersion and knowledge of our customer base (including user behavior and workflows, needs, price-sensitivity, conversion rates on promo activities, usage, renewals, target market size and availability).Conduct primary research (such as one-on-one interviews, surveys, and end-user usability sessions) and secondary research (data collection and market/competitor analyses).
- Manage product optimization projects: Develop functional specifications and acceptance criteria for assigned system and/or product enhancements to make sure your research.
Planning, tracking and documenting website optimization projects in close cooperation with users and internal staff (leading the research, assessment, definition of product requirements and successful launch). - Define/report/trend key performance indicators. Utilize web analytics tools and work with our business analysts to define and maintain competitive analysis and KPI reporting for all B2C activities. Define success criteria and measurement for product enhancements/features and marketing campaigns.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Coordinate and execute user interviews, using qualitative and quantitative methods as appropriate, including ethnographic research, in-context interviews, facilitated work sessions, and surveys
- Create and own project plans including schedule, milestones, dependencies and critical path.
- Manage projects, being accountable for deliverables, content, achievement of objectives and results.
- Ability to manage 3rd party vendors (technical and consultative)
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and quantitative analysis skills.
- Excellent KPI/report/dashboard design skills.
- Experience conducting user surveys, in-person user testing, web usability testing, etc.
- Solid understanding of Internet trends, business models, and technologies (emphasis on UI/UX design, usability testing, and
related fields) and ability to translate that knowledge into effective user research and successful management of website optimization projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience executing research projects including e-commerce, content portals, and web-based application design
- Ability to juggle multiple projects through the entire project lifecycle, from user testing/research through to a successful launch.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
- Familiarity with Web analytics tools (Omniture experience preferred)
- Ability to plan and manage time and resources, establish priorities and meet goals
- Excited to think creatively about web technologies and the future of online content distribution
- Curiosity about how people interact with the web -- do you think about how people search for content? How they learn? What makes a site successful?
- Familiarity with HTML, XML, CSS, AJAX and other relevant technologies is required
- Experience with Safari Books Online is a big plus
This position will be based in our Telegraph Hill/San Francisco office and will require periodic travel to our Sebastopol headquarters. Reports to the Director of the Professional (B2C) Market team.
